Courses Taken at Michigan State University:

Linguistics Courses
LIN 200 Introduction to Language: This course was taken to gain a basic understanding of the way languages work, how languages are learned, and how the English language is structured.

LIN 471 Sociolinguistics: This course was taken to understand the social implications of language use, specifically in America.

Language, Learning & Teaching Courses
LLT 307 Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language: This was the first course I took to gain insight to working with English Language Learners. It helped me develop my pedagogy on working with ELLs and aided in developing my first lessons for Ells (strongly based on the SIOP model of teaching).

LLT 346 Pedagogical Grammar: This course worked with the elements of grammar within the English language, and supplied me with tools for teaching English at the structural level.

LLT 361 Second Language Learning: This course was taken to develop a better understanding of the stages of development of learners when learning a second language. It also aided in my understanding of common issues in learning English and how to help ELLs overcome them.

Teacher's Education Courses
TE494 Field Experience in Teacher Education: This was an online-based course for TESOL minors, where we completed weekly readings on ESL assessment, and spent two hours in a field placement to observe an ESL classroom. Through this lab I was able to observe a high school ESL classroom with learners of multiple language levels, and was also able to compile a large portfolio of assessments (both informal and formal, formative and summative).

TE408 Minor Lab: In my senior Teacher's Education course, I was able to take an online lab dedicated to my minor. In this lab, we worked in groups to revise and recreate "typical" lesson plans for mainstream, English classrooms. This workshop helped develop my understanding of scaffolding the average English lesson plan to fully include English Language Learners in the classroom.
