Courses Taken at Michigan State University:

Teacher's Education Courses
TE 150 Reflections on Learning: This course was taken as a special section for students in the Urban Educators Cohort Program (UECP), which focused on our reflections of our past educational experiences. This course was particularly important for discovering the ways in which students learn, and how certain aspects of "mainstream" education are not always in favor of the urban student. Because of these issues, this course focused on the teacher's ability to reach students of many different backgrounds, and how to break to chain of oppression for students in urban schools.

TE 250 Human Diversity, Power & Opportunity in Social Institutions: This was my first education course taken at Michigan State, and it also had a special section for students in the UECP. This course challenged the ways in which social institutions create power and opportunity (or a lack thereof), particularly in urban school systems around the United States. It was in congruence with my placement at the Refugee Development Center, and asked us to further examine how human diversity plays a role in power relations in society.

TE 291A Special Topics Urban Education II (Two Semesters): This course was taken over my entire sophomore year, split into two semesters of field placement. The first field placement was at a Lansing High School, where we worked as a cohort to create an after-school program for urban, refugee students . The second field placement was at a local elementary school, examining how young students view human diversity in popular culture
