Enduring Understandings:

Working with "enduring understandings" is a concept that we have discussed in my Teacher's Education courses. These understandings ask teachers to create units in mind with goals or ideas that we want students to be able to remember many years after leaving our classroom; what are the large "take-aways" we can give students?
As such, I have designed my following unit to include several enduring understandings for students to examine through my four conceptual units. I hope that when students look back on my class, they will be able to reflect on these understandings and continue to build on them as they grow and develop throughout their lives.

Understandings for This Unit:

  • The way we treat others (in both our actions and our words) greatly affects the lives of others.
  • Discrimination occurs when people are not open to acceptance and understanding. It is a moral obligation of every person to prevent discrimination of others.
  • Power and privilege are influential in how our society is run. It is our responsibility to examine and asses the ways in which power and privilege work.
  • One person can make a difference in the world by committing to a cause. We are all important, and we all have a voice.
