Teaching Experiences Working With
English Language Learners:

Field Placement // East Lansing High School, East Lansing, MI // Tutor/Observer
Jan 2010 – May 2010
In this placement I was able to observe a high school’s English as a Second Language classroom. Within this classroom, I spent the majority of my time in one-on-one tutoring with ELLs of varying levels of English proficiency. I was also able to assist my mentor teacher in leading small and large group discussions during classroom working time. Through the Teacher’s Education course that this placement was associated with, I was also asked to compile a large portfolio of lessons and assessments (both from my placement as well as research) specifically for English Language Learners.

Sept 2008-Dec 2008
This placement was coordinated with the Refugee Development Center to be tailored specifically towards high school refugee students who were English Language Learners. My Teacher’s Education class that this placement was associated with began the after-school program, and because this was a first-time program, I was able to gain experience in developing the after-school discussions and games for English Language Learning students. This program also allowed me to help tutor students in all high school subjects they came for help in; this has afforded me the insight to see aspects of ELLs’ learning across curriculum.

Field Placement // Refugee Development Center, Lansing, MI // Tutor
Sept 2007-Dec 2007
This was my first in-depth interaction with English Language Learners as a teacher. At the Refugee Development Center, I worked with ELLs of a variety of ages, including pre-school children and adults, all of whom had varying levels of English proficiency. Through this experience, I gained insight about the lives of English Language Learners outside of school. This has allowed me to see the impact of learning English as a second language in all aspects of students’ lives, not only the impact on their academic achievements.
