Teaching Experience Working in Urban Education:

As mentioned in my course descriptions, my work in urban education has developed through Michigan State's "Urban Educators Cohort Program", a two-year program directed towards future educators looking to teach in America's urban districts. This program offered special sections of the required Teacher's Education courses tailored to urban studies. Upon graduation, and completion of the UECP, I will be placed in an urban school district for my year-long internship, and will seek employment in urban areas throughout the United States.

Summer Employment // MSU Detroit Urban Fellowship // Detroit International Academy for Young Women, Detroit, MI
June 2010- Aug 2010
One of my most recent placements in an urban school was through a summer fellowship with Detroit Public Schools. At this fellowship, I worked as a pre-service intern in a summer-school program at an all-girls high school. In this placement, I gained experience in co-teaching with two fellow educators in an English classroom. I helped tutor students one-on-one with various levels of high school English subjects, and helped facilitate small reading groups based on classroom novels and poetry.

Field Placement // Hill Alternative Education High School, Lansing, MI // Tutor/Observer
Sept 2009-Dec2009
Although not affiliated with the UECP, this placement was also in an urban school in Lansing, Michigan. For this particular program, I observed at an alternative high school for students looking to finish their diplomas, who could not attend the "mainstream" high schools for various reasons. Here, I was able to observe my mentor teachers working with many diverse learners, and was able to discuss rationales for lessons tailored to topics of relevance for students in urban areas.

Field Placement // Eastern High School, Lansing, MI // Tutor/ Group-coordinator
Sept 2008-Dec 2008
Through the first semester of my Teacher's Education course 291A, I was placed at Eastern High School to conduct an after-school tutoring program for refugee students. As my first experience working in an urban high school, this placement allowed me to see the materials students worked with (textbooks and computer labs), and experience many subject areas by tutoring in multiple high school subjects.

Field Placement // Bingham Elementary School, Lansing, MI // Program Leader
Jan 2009-April 2009
This placement was also affiliated with my TE291A course, and placed me in a third grade classroom, working with students in an after-school program. This program was designed to develop critical awareness of popular media in young children; we conducted lessons using popular fairy tales, Disney movies, popular songs, and local/national news to discuss important issues of race, gender, sexuality, and class.

Field Placement // Refugee Development Center, Lansing, MI // Tutor
Sept 2007-Dec 2007
This was my first placement in an urban area, working with students of very diverse backgrounds. Tutoring in a non-school affiliated placement such as the Refugee Development Center allowed to me to better understand the lives of students outside of school.
